Magdalena Kovarik

Designer & Artist

I talk with humans and computers to construct narratives, create art and design for the future. My work takes place where the analog meets the digital, man meets machine and outrage becomes art. It is important for me to comment on developments in the culture and society around me and contribute with my own skills and activism. Therefore the emotional response to very current issues such as the concept of borders or the ongoing refugee crisis drives my artistic efforts. My work includes product and UX design, interactive experiences and scenography, video, sound, as well as a variety of computational art projects. Lately I focus on new ways of storytelling and experimental journalism such as VR documentary or 360° video to beat the media with it’s own new weapons. Using research as a foundation, I question art and design and the relatively artificial boundaries between them in in my own practice. Experimentation is my strategy, between humor and seriousness I try to engage my audience. Having studied Industrial Design in Berlin, Paris and Tel Aviv I gained multiple perspectives on new technologies and design thinking strategies. This background in problem solving and an eye for detail can also be found in my artistic practice where I put the human in the center. I am a Fulbright scholar and graduated from New York Universities’s Interactive Telecommunication Program (ITP) – a unique art-tech master’s program also known as ‘the center of the recently possible’. I got selected as Google Newslab in summer 2017. Since fall 2017 I hold a PhD position in the project ‘Postdigital Art Practices in Cultural Education’ at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam.
